Your first grid project

Grid Drawing for Beginners

A first grid drawing should reduce complexity, not create more of it. Use a simple reference, a moderate cell count, and a light target grid so you can focus on the largest shapes.

How it works

From reference to usable grid in three steps

  1. 01

Choose a high-contrast reference with one clear subject.

  2. 02

    Use a 6 x 6 or 8 x 8 grid and draw the matching target grid lightly.

  3. 03

Sketch large shapes first, then check proportions before shading.

Better results

Use the grid as a guide, not a distraction

Choose a simple subject

Clear silhouettes and large value groups are easier for a first project.

Avoid cell-by-cell detail

Keep checking how shapes connect across grid boundaries.

Review from a distance

Step back often to see proportion errors that disappear up close.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is ArtistGrid free to use?

Yes. You can upload a reference image, customize the grid, and export standard PNG, JPG, or PDF files without creating an account.

Is my reference image uploaded to a server?

No. ArtistGrid processes the image locally in your browser. The photo is used to draw the preview and export canvas, but it is not sent to an image-processing server.

How many squares should a beginner use?

Six to eight cells per side is a practical starting range. It provides guidance without turning the page into dozens of tiny drawing tasks.

What should I draw first in each cell?

Start with the largest contour or value boundary that crosses the cell. Save texture, eyelashes, fur, and small details for later.

Why does my drawing still look distorted?

Check that the reference and target grids share the same aspect ratio and cell count. Then compare where major edges cross each grid line.
